4G or 3G based HD Time Lapse for Construction Site Monitoring

If you are looking to install a HD Time Lapse Camera at a construction site, using a cellular architecture offers several benefits. The system can be built as a stand alone solution and using the provided internet, you can store Time Lapse Images off site.

When embarking on this type of project the first thing to consider is which mode of cellular network to use. Our 2 main systems cover 3G and 4G. Both are then split into sub divisions to include 3G HSPA and 4G LTE.

Sometimes the specification will be driven by the End User. Your client may request a 4G Construction Site HD Time Lapse Camera, as they want the best technology. 4G and 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution ) at this moment in time, offer the fastest speed.

Remember though, for a 4G or 3G based time lapse camera, you are not constantly downloading and uploading a live feed. We set the Camera to capture a construction site image every x amount of minutes.

The Speeds of 4G Time Lapse & 3G Time Lapse

So, you possibly know that 3G is the third generation and 4G is the 4th Generation. The main thing we need to look at is upload and download speeds. 4G is around 4/5 times faster than 3G. However, for our time lapse projects 3G works great. We have more 3G Time Lapse Camera Systems at construction sites, than we do 4G.

Lets take a close look at those speeds:

We provide Static IP SIM cards from all the main cellular network providers. For this example let’s take a look at EE and their 4G Network.

EE’s 4G Network now, offers speeds of 12-15Mb/second
With an enhancement to their 4G network, very soon that will be an average of 24-30Mb/second. Top speeds are up to 60Mb/second.

Now if we look at 3G, on paper it will look incredibly inferior to the speeds of 4G.

A 3G Network, including EE, plus 02, Vodafone etc gives you an average speed of 1.5Mb/second.

Not that impressive, but it will work and it works well. Our HD Time Lapse cameras are capturing a JPEG image. This is not all that demanding on uploading and downloading bandwidth.

Our 4G and 3G Construction site cameras can be used for live viewing. Whilst using the cellular network, this is not really advised. A high resolution network camera will power through your data allowance (if constantly live viewing). In the camera’s most natural set up, it will capture an image and send it to a remote server.

3G and 4G network speeds

The Cellular network is growing all the time and speeds are getting faster and faster. This is all to accommodate you and i, the mobile phone users. These higher speeds of the 4th Generation, makes downloading music and watching videos much smoother.

Our 3g and 4g Time Lapse Camera captures an image over a set schedule. One of the most popular is every 10 minutes or 6 per hour. This type of network operation does not really require 4G.

3G contracts are more flexible and a little less money. For example, we can provide a 3G Static SIM card on a 12 month contract. The minimum contract for a 4G Static SIM is 24 months.

So, a 4G Time Lapse Camera will cost a little more and we are not saying rule it out. We just want to stress the point that 3G will be fine.

Fixed SIM, not a Mobile SIM

Here at Burgess Technologies we programme the entire system. One very important aspect of the build, is the SIM card. We configure this to the 3G/4G Router so the camera is operational from the minute it receives power.

If you tried to operate the 4G time lapse camera and router with a mobile phone SIM card, it would not work. The SIM in your mobile phone does not allocate you a fixed IP address. The IP address of your Mobile SIM will change, this will alter and quickly corrupt any remote links and paths.

What we need is a Static IP address, which a special machine to machine Fixed SIM card will give you. These are available from all the main mobile operators. These include o2, Vodafone and EE. If you ask someone in a high street store, chances are they will not know what you are talking about.
