How to stream an IP network camera live to YouTube & Facebook

One of the questions here at Burgess we get asked a lot is, “how do I live stream or broadcast an IP video camera to YouTube”. More so of late is people asking the same question but regarding social media, “how do I live stream HD quality video with an IP camera over Facebook ?”

In this post we are going to break down the system we build to give you a good overview of how streaming an IP camera to YouTube actually works. We will list the hardware we used to create the system. This will include a 5MP HD IP network camera, a mini PC, pre-loaded with Windows 10 Pro and our own advanced time-lapse and live-streaming software.

YouTube & Facebook Live Camera Resolution

We use a mini 5MP IP camera. 5MP in resolution is 2560×1960, full HD 1080P is 1920 x 1080. So 5MP is a good option for YouTube stream and live broadcast. YouTube will stream 5MP video and above, but you need to consider bandwidth or SIM data usage if it’s a 4G/5G SIM card solution. Streaming to YouTube in full HD is the best option. As sites such as YouTube and Facebook are viewed on laptops and phones then 1920 x 1080 resolution is adequate for most.

OTHER FEATURES OF OUR YOUTUBE CAM:

On-board recording for CCTV

We can send the system and camera out with an SD card on-board. The storage is configured to constantly record video on-board the device. As well as live-streaming, you also have a CCTV camera with a recording device. The HD video will loop every X amount of weeks. For example, you could have the SD card to record video looping every 2 weeks. What that means is every 2 weeks the camera will record over the previous 2 weeks. This works well, if there was an incident or intruder then you would usually be aware of that on the day, night or the next day. You can then log into the system, view the footage, export and share the video if needed.

The Live Stream YouTube Camera is also compact and light

Actually the entire system is compact and light. The 2 x main component parts are the mini PC and the camera. The body of the camera, which you can see on the picture is only 100 mm long, which is just short of 4 inches. The mini PC is also around 4 inches long and wide.

Streaming Programme pre-loaded to the mini PC

Most IP cameras use RTSP as their streaming protocol. However, Facebook & YouTube use RTMP. This is where the mini PC comes in. Our mini PC runs a software that converts the video stream into RTMP. We can also make changes such as re-stream in a different resolution and bitrate etc. This is a useful feature for time-lapse applications, especially those that are using a 4G data SIM and cellular router.

For example, the live stream camera can also be set to capture images for documentation and time-lapse creation. If you are using a 4K camera, or even a 12MP or 20MP camera system, you could capture the images for time-lapse in full resolution. Typically, for time-lapse you look to capture a high resolution image around every 10 minutes. So you would have effectively 2 streams. The camera capturing images is one stream and a lower resolution re-streamed to YouTube through an RTMP feed.

How to install a YouTube & Facebook Live IP camera

This first depends upon the application. Is it a construction site or is it for business promotion and tourism. Some construction sites have an available network but most of our systems go out 4G configured & broadband ready. The good news is we build 2 x systems, the more popular is our live broadcast camera solution that plugs directly into an available router and switch. This is a popular selection as the camera is deployed more for business promotion and tourism. Those sectors the customer or business usually has a network available.

Let’s first have a look at a picture of how it goes together.

Simply plug the mini PC into your router or switch, as soon as the PC receives power and broadband it will automatically start to live stream the camera to YouTube & or Facebook.

5G is starting to roll out in 2019 and we are going to look into what benefits this will bring to time lapse camera installers. In particular we will cover image capture, live video streaming and the ability to log into the hardware remotely. All will be done over a ultra high speed 5G network.

5G Time Lapse Camera & Live Video: The benefits

Perfect image capture

As the resolution of time lapse cameras increase, so does the image size. Our network time lapse camera systems capture images in JPEG format. Today our highest mega-pixel solution is 20MP’s. This captures images in 5,472 x 3,648 resolution. In some instances and depending on cellular signal strength, images can transfer not 100% complete, when sending to the cloud. A 20 Mega-pixel will struggle to send complete images over 3G and needs a good stable 4G signal to be 100% perfect. With the upgrade to 5G, images will be sent pefectly.

5G will make large file size image transfer perfect. So this is the first and main benefit. The increased speeds of a 5G Time lapse camera system, will help images to be sent perfectly. 5G will offer speeds of around 1 gig per second which is 1000 MBS ( megabits per second ).

Live Video Streaming over 5G

First let’s look at 3 main advantages over a more traditional DSLR camera system:

1, Live Video Stream: The main advantage of deploying a network based time lapse camera system is the ability to monitor through a live video stream. This is something a DSLR camera could not do. Live video then falls into several feature areas. You can live view the time lapse camera through an app on your phone, direct through the camera, Video Management Software, emdedded to our own portal or on YouTube Live.

The below video example, shows live video embedded to our own built, white label, your brand and logo monitoring portal.

2, Live Video Recordings: Take our Sony 20MP Time Lapse camera for example, you can record video clips to use in your post production. This will allow you to make a final film that includes stitched images and also cutting into a live video shoot. This could be useful for certain days of importance at the construction site.

Use an existing network:

Only a network based time lapse camera has the ability to utilise an existing networking infrastructure. Many construction sites now have their own network. So maybe the first question is, do you need a 5G deployment or can you use an existing Cat5e, Cat6 or cat6a structured cabling network.

4G SIM prices will reduce

An Ultra HD Time Lapse camera system over a 5G architecture will be the best solution available. However, if you don’t need live video as a feature, then using a 4G SIM card will still be an option. You can get 3G SIM card deals now at a really good price. Now 5G SIM contracts are becoming popular, the older 4G data plans will become lower in price.

Our impressive Sony Time-Lapse & Live Video Solution, on-board stores and off-site cloud archives images in 20MP resolution @ 5472 x 3648. Focal length: F = 8.8 mm to 25.7 mm. Optical zoom 2.9x, Clear Image Zoom 2.0x, Digital zoom 2.0x = Total zoom 11.6x.

The first image below is the camera in its default settings, no zoom has been used. As you can see its capturing some of the roof. The second image is with the optical zoom used.

The below picture is only a screen shot, in 1254 x 595 resolution. This has been zoomed in on our PC, like the similar zoom you can do in post production. If you look back at the very first picture and note how far away the white van in. Post zoomed in, it still holds its focus quite well.

This captures images in 5,472 x 3,648 resolution. In some instances and depending on cellular signal strength, images can transfer not 100% complete, when sending to the cloud. A 20 Mega-pixel will struggle to send complete images over 3G and needs a good stable 4G signal to be 100% perfect. With the upgrade to 5G, images will be sent pefectly.

So maybe the first question is, do you need a 5G deployment or can you use an existing Cat5e, Cat6 or cat6a structured cabling network.
